# eBay Error: "Package dimensions exceeded maximum allowable limit"

If your eBay listing fails to publish with an error like this:

> ❌ **Package dimensions exceeded maximum allowable limit for service USPS Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope**

it means your **Package Dimensions don't fit the shipping service** in the **Shipping Policy** selected for your listing. This guide explains why it happens and how to fix it in a couple of minutes.

***

### 🔎 Why This Happens

eBay checks your **Package Dimensions** against the **shipping services** in your selected **Shipping Policy**. If they don't match, eBay blocks the listing.

In this case, your **Shipping Policy includes a Flat Rate Envelope service**, but your package is **too large to fit in an envelope**.

* ✉️ A **USPS Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope** is a flat envelope, roughly **12.5 in x 9.5 in**, meant for thin items and documents.
* 📦 If your **Package Dimensions** describe a box (for example **14 x 10 x 5 inches**), it physically cannot fit inside that envelope.

So eBay rejects the listing. This is an eBay shipping rule, not a PrimeLister setting. PrimeLister sends eBay the **Shipping Policy** and **Package Dimensions** you set in the listing's **eBay** section (for example **eBay US**), and eBay catches the conflict.

> 💡 **The quick version:** your Shipping Policy is set up for an **envelope**, but your item is a **box**. You need to use a Shipping Policy built for boxes.

### 🛠️ How to Fix It

There are two ways to resolve this, depending on your item.

#### ✅ Option 1: Your Item Is a Box (Most Common)

Use a Shipping Policy that has **box-friendly services** (like USPS Ground Advantage or calculated Priority Mail) instead of a flat rate envelope.

**Step 1.** Go to **eBay** and open your **Business Policies**: **Account → Business Policies** (or **Seller Hub → Account → Business Policies**).

**Step 2.** Open the **shipping policy** you are using and **remove the Flat Rate Envelope service**. Add a service that fits boxes, such as:

* 📦 **USPS Ground Advantage**
* 📦 **USPS Priority Mail (calculated by weight and size)**
* 📦 **FedEx or UPS Ground**

**Step 3.** Save the policy on eBay.

**Step 4.** Return to **PrimeLister**. Open the listing from your **Inventory**, expand the **eBay** section (for example **eBay US**), and under **Business Policies** check that the correct **Shipping Policy** is selected. If you created a new policy on eBay, select it here.

**Step 5.** In the same **eBay** section, confirm your **Package Weight** and **Package Dimensions** (**Length**, **Width**, **Height**) are correct, then crosslist again.

> ✅ Once the envelope service is removed, your box dimensions (for example 14 x 10 x 5) will pass eBay's check with no error.

#### ✅ Option 2: Your Item Really Does Fit in an Envelope

If your item is thin and flat (for example a folded garment or documents), you can keep the **Flat Rate Envelope** service. In that case, the dimensions are the problem.

**Step 1.** In **PrimeLister**, open the listing from your **Inventory** and expand the **eBay** section (for example **eBay US**).

**Step 2.** Scroll to **Package Dimensions** and make sure the **Length**, **Width**, and **Height** fit within an envelope (well under **12.5 in x 9.5 in**, with a very low height). Flat rate packaging has a fixed size, so large dimensions are not needed.

**Step 3.** Save and crosslist again.

> 💡 Flat rate means USPS charges one price regardless of weight (up to 70 lbs), as long as the item fits in the flat rate packaging and the flap closes normally. If your item bulges or needs a box, use **Option 1** instead.

### 📋 Quick Reference: Which Service for Which Item?

| Your Item | Use This Type of Service |
| ---------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 📦 A box of any size | **USPS Ground Advantage**, **Priority Mail (calculated)**, **FedEx / UPS Ground** |
| ✉️ Thin, flat, fits in an envelope | **Flat Rate Envelope** (keep dimensions small) |
| 👕 Soft items in a poly mailer | **USPS Ground Advantage** (calculated by weight and size) |

> ⚠️ **Tip:** If you sell mostly boxed items, create a shipping policy on eBay that uses **USPS Ground Advantage** or **calculated shipping**, then select it under **Business Policies → Shipping Policy** in the **eBay** section of your listings. This avoids the envelope conflict entirely on future listings.
